River Recreation Opportunities
(Canoe routes and river rafting)

  1. Columbia River

Athalmere (Invermere), downstream to the Donald Bridge (140 km). Beautiful, gentle canoe route through wetland marshes full of wildlife and waterfowl activity. Grade 1. There are many in and take out locations to tailor trip duration. Allow 3-5 days for the entire trip.

Kinbasket Lake, Lake Revelstoke & Upper Arrow Lake

Much of the Columbia River system is now developed and impounded by large hydro electric dams. The lakes created by these dams afford significant recreational boating opportunities. Those with small craft (canoes in particular) should be aware that weather can change rather quickly. It is not uncommon for these lakes to change from a placid surface to sporting 3 foot whitecaps in a period of 5 to 10 minutes. Summer wind storms can make these lakes treacherous, so please be alert to changing wind patterns.

  2. Blaeberry River

Mummery Creek, downstream to the Split Creek recreation site (15 km). Gentle canoe route along braided Blaeberry River. Grade 1. Warning, unnavigable below take out, canyon and waterfalls.

IOOB campsite, downstream to the HWY. 1 Bridge (10 km). Scenic canoe route through the lower Blaeberry Valley. Grade 1 & 2. Put in at IOOB campsite (first bridge over the Blaeberry River), take out at Highway 1 bridge on river right.

  3. Bluewater Creek

Bluewater Bridge recreation site, downstream to the Bluewater Creek recreation site (3 km). Excellent seasonal moving water canoe and kayak route for experienced paddlers. Grade 3.

  4. Goldstream River

Goldstream mine, downstream to the power line crossing the Goldstream River (18 km, 2-4 hrs.). A pleasant paddle in meandering, marshy section of the Goldstream River. Grade 1. Detailed handout available from the Revelstoke office of the Columbia Forest District.
