Paint & Empress Lakes

These two high elevation alpine lakes are located on Mt. Symonds which forms part of the Gold Range of the Monashee Mountains. Mt Symonds is located 60 kilometers southeast of Revelstoke rising to a height of 2,347 meters (7,700 ft) and does not form a peak but is rather flat on top. Monashee Provincial Park is situated 4 km to the west. Mount Fosthall is the dominant peak here rising 2,679 meters (8,791 ft).

Access to Mt. Symonds is via an active logging road and old mining trail. The trail leads to Paint Lake and can be reached in approximately one hour by hiking the trial

Mt. Symonds was known as Bald Mountain and has an extensive mining history. Mineral exploration occured on "Big Ledge" and soon the name Big Ledge property was born. The Big Ledge property dates back to 1902 when sixteen mineral claims were located and six surveyed at the time. A wagon road six miles long was constructed in 1905 and ran from Arrow Lake towards the mine.

The following is a brief chronological history of the area:

1910 A tunnel 200 feet long was driven into the mountain and large deposits of zinc were discovered that yielded up to 45% zinc/ton.
1922 A trail one mile in length was cut from the end of the wagon road to a cabin at the lower end of the mineral claim. Americans from the states of California and Minnesota purchased the Big Ledge Property.
1926 3,400 feet of diamond drilling was made by the new owners.
1927 Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (COMINCO) took out an option to purchase the Big Ledge Property. An extensive exploration program was carried out June thru September by Cominco.
1948 5,798 feet of diamond drilling completed.
1949 Ten men employed to continue diamond drilling on additional 7,239 feet.
1950 Sixteen holes were drilled for a total length of 3,355 feet.
1952 The Big Ledge Property consisted of 44 Crown-granted and 25 recorded mineral claims. Geological mapping, surveying and drilling was conducted on the western part of the ledge. A total of 4,740 feet in 11 holes were drilled, employing nine men.
1964 Diamond drilling continued, producing 17 holes for a total length of 8080 feet. Ore samples proved to be of low grade and the mineralized zones were irregular.
1965 One diamond drill hole was drilled to a depth of 397 feet. This last operation was serviced by helicopter from Nakusp.

Since 1966 there is no record of exploration work on the Big Ledge Propery, the property is still held by Cominco.
