DECISION ABOUT LOGGING IN ELK CREEK WATERSHED RELEASED

CHILLIWACK – An amendment to Cattermole Timber’s 2001-2005 forest development plan for partial logging in two cutblocks of the Elk Creek watershed was approved by Chilliwack forest district manager Kerry Grozier.

The area approved for logging consists of two cutblocks totalling 110 hectares of partial cutting, about 10 km east of Chilliwack. This forest development plan amendment was submitted in January 2002 and was advertised and available for public review and comment from January 14 to March 14, 2002. Information received beyond March 14, 2002 up until July 4, 2003, was reviewed and considered in the decision.

In making a determination, the district manager must consider if a forest development plan or amendment to an existing plan meets the requirements of the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and associated regulations to adequately conserve and protect forest resources.

Elk Creek is considered working forest and is to be managed for integrated use by balancing the economic, productive, spiritual, ecological and recreation values of this forest area to meet the economic, social and cultural needs of people and communities, including First Nations. Any decisions in the working forest will also provide for biological diversity, soil conservation, water quality objectives, protection of known fish and wildlife species, scenic diversity, archaeological and other forest resource values in the area.

Cattermole has proposed harvesting up to 40 per cent of the forest stand, while retaining the veteran Douglas-fir trees. Stream protection along Elk Creek has been enhanced over and above current Forest Practices Code requirements. Terrain stability, watershed assessments and archaeological studies were also considered by the district manager in his determination.

Before Cattermole Timber can begin harvesting activities, the company must apply for a cutting permit.
