Alexis Creek Community School Association
The Alexis Creek Community School Association (ACCSA) is a not-for-profit society made up of board members from the community. Elected board members have included parents, teachers, school principle and interested community residents without children.
A member of the Association for Community Education in British Columbia (ACEbc), the ACCSA provides a vehicle for the participation of community members in the activities and efforts of their neighbourhood school.
The main source of funding for the Association is through Ministry of Education CommunityLINK grants. The purpose of this grant is to fund programs and services that will improve the educational performance, including the academic achievement and social functioning of vulnerable students. Utilizing CommunityLINK funding, the community school has a contracted manager/coordinator who works in cooperation with the school administration plus community organizations, clubs, groups, businesses, institutions and individuals to provide social, cultural, recreational and educational programs for vulnerable children and their families.
Activities offered by the community school have included many in-school and extra-curricular programs. Sports programs have included T-ball, softball, hockey, skating, wrestling, badminton, tennis, soccer, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, and floor hockey. Educational programs have included presentations by local professionals, rocketry, film making, computer use, photography, science fairs, first aid and more. Recreational and arts programs have included parades, Easter egg hunts, beadwork, card making, and many other craft activities. The ACCSA generally has a series of summer day camps for children which entail a combination of activities. A few students are usually hired during the summer months as well, providing significant benefits in work experience and social responsibility.
