The Stewardship Department of the Chilcotin Forest District Office is comprised of many programs and initiatives. One of these programs is the “Forest and Range Evaluation Program”. This program is aimed to monitor the specific values outlined under the new Forest and Range Practices Act.
Within this FREP program, there are 11 different potential values to monitor within the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA). These values include: biodiversity, cultural/heritage, fish/riparian, forage and associated plant communities, recreation, resource features, soils, timber, visual quality, water and wildlife.
During the 2006 field season, the Chilcotin Forest District completed resource based monitoring evaluations of four FRPA values; biodiversity, fish/riparian, soils, and water quality. Two of these values, soils and water quality, were successful pilot projects completed.
Presently, the Stewardship Department of DCH is piloting the cultural and heritage value, with the goal of developing the necessary indicators and protocol to aid in future ground monitoring regarding this value. This pilot project is tribute to the goal of DCH in fostering and encouraging relationship building and meaningful participation between First Nations, industry and government. The local First Nations bands and industry partners involved with this project are: the Tsilhqot’in National Government, The Ulkatcho First Nation, BCTS, West Fraser Mills Ltd., Yun Ka Whu’ten Holdings Ltd., and of course, the Chilcotin Forest District.
DCH’s FREP team thanks you for taking the time to read up on our program.
