Williams Lake TSA

Resource Road Safety Committee

Williams Lake Timber Supply Area Resource Road Safety Committee (WLTSARRSC)

September 8, 2009

Introduction

The concept of utilizing a road safety management group for road administration is driven out of the need for systems to effectively coordinate the use of our road networks to increase safety awareness.  Road permit holders/prime maintainers enhance effectiveness of road safety systems through sharing of responsibilities and involving affected parties.

Purpose

The primary function of the committee is to coordinate activities and identify best practices between licensees, BCTS and MOFR in the Williams Lake TSA in an effort to improve safety on our forest roads.  This committee deals primarily with safety issues faced by road users over the TSA as a whole.

Some examples of common safety issues are:

  • Shifting and concentration of harvesting areas

  • Changing truck configurations requiring road upgrades

  • Inconsistent interpretation and application of policy and legislation

  • Prime Maintainer responsibilities

  • Road design and maintenance standards

  • Radio calling procedures

  • Standardized road signage

  • Road use procedures

  • Increasing expectations regarding forest road safety within the industry, the government and the public

  • Safety concerns which arise from users amongst the group

  • Sharing of information such as safety best practices, hazard alerts, road hazards

The WLTSARRSC will help address the above concerns, and any others that may arise in the future.
