Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the professional reliance module the participants will be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of:

  • The meaning of the term "professional reliance" and how it fits into the overall forest policy framework.
  • How the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) relies on the four professional acts?
  • The general area of practice each profession fills on the forestry team applying FRPA.
  • What to expect from professionals?
  • The role of employers, peers, subordinates and the public in professional reliance.
  • How to get more information about professional reliance?

Condition
Given the professional reliance sessions (recorded presentation, FRPA Online Sessions), a copy of the Acts and regulations, access to other materials on the FRPA Training Website and the websites of each of the professional associations.

Standard
Explain, to a peer, what is changing in the way they conduct their day-to-day activities (and why) through professional reliance in the application of FRPA.

Target Audience

  • Employers and clients of resource professionals;
  • Resource professionals;
  • Peers and subordinates of resource professionals; and
  • Public, stakeholders and forest workers.

Portions of the Professional Reliance Module will be delivered as part of the Woodlots Planning & Practices Module and the Range Planning & Practices Module.

Training Components

  • Professional Reliance Session (Recorded Presentation)-For initial information dissemination. The facilitated session will be approximately 40 minutes in length and consist of slides and recorded presentations by resource professionals. It is intended that this module be delivered as a companion to the Overview Module for forest practitioners, and to sessions delivered to other audiences (range/woodlots/loggers/public and stakeholders). A discussion session will follow to enable participants to apply knowledge and build understanding through local discussions and activities. Sessions will be delivered to larger audiences of 70-100+ participants;
  • Professional Reliance Session (FRPA Online Sessions)-for clarification and building understanding. Sessions will focus on pre-defined topic areas (e.g. addressing regional examples or issues). Sessions will involve live presentations by experts addressing questions submitted by participants prior to the sessions, followed by live questions and answers with the experts. Sessions will be delivered to smaller audiences of 10-20 participants with up to 20 locations connected to the same session; and
  • Training Website - for on-going updates and support. The website will contain news and information, training materials, questions and answers, and linkages to other information such as legislation, codes of ethics, professional standards and contact information for each of the professional organizations.

FRPA Online Session

Approximately 1 session will be conducted-topic to be determined:

Introduction

  • Describe the logistics and process for the session
  • Overview of how to use the technology

  • Cover questions posted in advance plus following topics, examples and activities:

    • The team approach
    • Examples of accountability
    • Case studies

Question & Answer

  • FRPA Online Session

Pre-requisites

A working knowledge of forest practices, and the roles and responsibilities of professionals and others under the existing legislative regime (e.g., Forest Act, Forest Practices Code of BC Act). A general knowledge of the professional Acts is desired.

This module will be delivered in conjunction with the Overview Module. Participants should have attended the Overview Module or have an understanding of the content covered in that module (e.g., review of the recorded presentations and print material on the training website).

Participants in the FRPA Online Sessions must have completed the professional reliance recorded presentation-either by attending the facilitated session or viewing the materials in self-study format from the training website.

Delivery

Recorded Presentation

The session may be delivered as a stand-alone, but is preferably delivered in conjunction with other sessions and as a companion to the Overview Module.

Personnel requirements to deliver these sessions are listed above in the section under Online Classroom Sessions.

  • Room size--70-100+ participants in attendance; and
  • Projection equipment-LCD projector and sound equipment to project images and sound.

FRPA Online Session

The FRPA Online Sessions will be delivered concurrently to multiple locations (10-20+ sites) in sessions of 10 to 20 participants. Up to four sessions may be delivered. The sessions will be organized for regional delivery to tailor the content and examples to local conditions and issues.

Personnel requirements to deliver these sessions are listed above in the section under Online Classroom Sessions.

Equipment requirements to deliver this module include the following:

  • Room size - target 10-20 participants in attendance;
  • Microphone for asking questions;
  • Projection equipment - LCD projector and sound equipment to project images and sound; and
  • High speed Internet connection.
