Forest Practices Code Transition Training

A number of significant changes to forestry and range practices in BC will come into effect in early December 2002 as a result of amendments to the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and associated regulations. These amendments are the first phase in the move to a new forest and range practices framework in BC. The amendments introduce some of the efficiencies provided for in the new Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) that will come into force in the April, 2003 timeframe.

Phase 1 — FPC Transition Training contains training on the transitional requirements in force immediately as a result of the amendments to the Forest Practices Code (FPC).

The target audience for this training program includes government personnel, licencees and others who plan, conduct and monitor forestry and range practices in BC. The training builds on the existing FPC legislation and assumes participants have a working knowledge of the FPC.

Objectives of Phase 1 Training

The objectives of Phase 1 training are to:

  • provide a common message to forestry and range practitioners across the Province on the amendments to the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act and regulations;
  • facilitate a common high-level understanding amongst all parties responsible for the implementation (e.g., industry, government) on the immediate operational changes they need to make as a result of the amendments to the FPC; and
  • communicate the amendments to parties responsible for implementation in a timely manner.

Training Delivery

Phase 1 Training is being delivered through a series of Orientation Sessions, held December 17 to 19 in District and Regional Ministry of Forests offices around the province. For more information about the timing and location of these sessions, visit the Forestry Services Delivery home page.

Orientation Sessions are one-day sessions combining presentations from subject matter experts (recorded and replayed at each session), live review activities and a group discussion activity.

Participants will receive an opportunity to hear the changes in the Forest Practices Code discussed and explained by experts, as well as a chance to discuss the implications of the changes for day-to-day operations in the field.

Phase 1 Training Materials

This Training Portal provides access to the information provided to participants of the Orientation Sessions. This includes the FPC Transition Primer, handouts of overhead slides for presentations, and the group discussion activity. All of these materials can be downloaded from the subject area pages or from the Resources page.

The FPC Transition Primer is also available in printed format through the following sources:

  • the Ministry of Forests Library
  • public libraries throughout BC
  • university libraries
  • key agencies (Forintek, Feric, First Nations Summit, CISTI)
  • National Library of Canada

Future Training

In January and February 2004, to coincide with the introduction of the Forest and Range Practices Act, a second phase of training will be presented to provide information and discussion of the changes brought in by the FRPA.

The "Training Framework Graphic" (click to view in a new browser window) shows how the two phases of training are related.
