Briefing Sessions
on
Forest Practices Code Transition

In November 2002, the provincial government introduced Bill 75, the Forests Statutes Amendment Act (No. 2) 2002, streamlining certain provisions of the Forest Practices Code. The revisions to the Code and related regulations took effect December 17th, 2002. They represent the first phase in the move to a new forest practices framework in British Columbia. The changes will alter some requirements for forest planning and practices in the province.

Changes to Code legislation are being made in two steps. First, Bill 75 introduces some immediate changes, which are intended to carry through to 2005. Then, Bill 74, the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and its regulations will come into effect later this year to provide a new regulatory model. The FRPA regulatory model is expected to include the FPC transitional changes and go beyond them. Information sessions on the second phase (FRPA) will take place once the FRPA regulations are brought in.

To provide information to the public on the changes for the first phase (Bill 75 - FPC transition changes only), briefing sessions are planned in various locations around the province in late January and early February 2003.
