BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is committed to continually improving
forest safety and having safe worksites by demonstrating
and promoting safe forest management practices and implementing
a systematic approach to safety in all Business Areas.
BCTS achieved S.A.F.E. Company certification in August
2008 and is proud to participate in this industry lead
initiative.
BC Timber Sales subscribes to the Health and Safety Accord
of the British Columbia Forest Industry, which states
that all fatalities and injuries are preventable. Everyone
working in the BCTS program is invited to provide input
to the local timber sales manager of BCTS on ways to
improve the safety program.
During 2007, BC Timber Sales:
- implemented an updated safety program for BCTS employees
and registered to become a fully SAFE certified company
with the BC Forest Safety Council (BCFSC);
- put in place a requirement for mandatory registration
with the BCFSC Safe Company program for all companies
or individuals who wish to work on timber sales advertised
for sale after April 1, 2007; and
- put in place requirements for mandatory registration
with the BCFSC Safe Company program for all companies
who wish to tender applications for or work on contracts
advertised or awarded by BCTS after April 1, 2007.
During 2008/2009, BC Timber Sales will:
- actively pursue establishing itself as a certified
SAFE Company with the BCFSC;
- put in place requirements for mandatory SAFE Company
certification for all Timber Sales Licences advertised
after December 31, 2008. All parties wanting to employ
workers or subcontractors on Timber Sale Licences
or those intending to direct the on-site activities
of workers or subcontractors on Timber Sales advertised
after December 31, 2008 will need to be SAFE Company
certified. Licensees that do not direct on-site activities
will not need to be SAFE certified; and
- put in place a requirement for mandatory certification
with the BCFSC Safe Company program for all companies
who wish to tender applications for or work on contracts
advertised by BCTS after December 31, 2008.
The BCTS safety program will continue to be a public
document and provide access to important information
about forest safety and links to other organizations
also committed to improving the safety record of the
sector.
