   BCTS Safety Program
  Forest Safety

BC Timber Sales (BCTS) is committed to continually improving forest safety and having safe worksites by demonstrating and promoting safe forest management practices and implementing a systematic approach to safety in all Business Areas. BCTS achieved SAFE Company certification in August 2008 and is proud to participate in this industry lead initiative.

BCTS subscribes to the Health and Safety Accord of the British Columbia forest industry, which states that all fatalities and injuries are preventable. People working in the BCTS program are invited to provide input to the local timber sales manager on ways to improve the safety program.

In 2007, BCTS implemented an updated safety program for BCTS employees and registered to become a SAFE certified company with the BC Forest Safety Council (BCFSC). The BCTS registration was accompanied by a requirement for mandatory registration in the SAFE Company program for all companies or individuals wanting to work on Timber Sale Licences (TSLs) and all companies wanting to tender applications for or to work on contracts advertised or awarded by BCTS after April 1, 2007.

During 2008/2009, BC Timber Sales:

  • achieved SAFE Company certification with the BCFSC;
  • put into place requirements for mandatory SAFE Company certification for all TSLs advertised after December 31, 2008. All parties wanting to employ workers or subcontractors on TSLs or those intending to direct the on-site activities of workers or subcontractors on TSLs advertised after December 31, 2008 must be SAFE Company certified. Licensees not directing on-site activities will not be required to be SAFE certified; and
  • put into place a requirement for mandatory certification with the BCFSC Safe Company program for all companies wanting to tender applications for or work on contracts advertised by BCTS after December 31, 2008.

Parties not yet certified and experiencing difficulties in achieving the expectations of the SAFE Company program should contact the BCFSC to explore options for achieving certification and being qualified to participate in activities of BCTS.

If you have started a new forestry business or are reactivating a dormant firm, BCFSC has a New Entrant program that is recognized by BCTS. For further information on the options available through the BCFSC, check: http://www.bcforestsafe.org/safe_companies/registration.html.

A company or party with certification other than the SAFE Company should contact the local BCTS office to determine eligibility for activities under BCTS.

The BCTS safety program continues to be public, with this website providing access to important information about forest safety and links to other organizations also committed to improving the safety record of the sector and establishing a culture of safety.
