Chain of Custody
In response to customer demands for independent and credible verification that timber originates
from legal and well managed forests, wood purchasers increasingly prefer or require forest certification
in their corporate procurement policies and/or in meeting certain regulated building code requirements.
Chain of Custody refers to the tracking of forest products through all phases of ownership,
processing and transportation, from the forest of origin to the end consumer in order to verify
its certification status. BCTS does not hold chain of custody certification, nor does it provide
a system for tracking chain of custody.
BCTS can however provide the following information to
clients to assist in their planning and for their chain of custody certification systems:
-
Identification of Timber Sale Licence (TSL) certification status in BCTS Business Area
Sales Schedules,
-
Clauses in the Timber Sale Licence document (provided in TSL bid packages) verifying that
the timber to be harvested under the Licence is SFM certified,
-
A letter in TSL bid packages verifying TSL SFM certification status and transferring the
SFM certification credits to the Licensee.
Responsibility for implementation of the BCTS SFM certification strategy and goals rests individually
with the twelve Timber Sales Offices, located in all the regions of BC. For more information
about BCTS Business Area certification activities, including TSL SFM certification status in
Timber Sale Schedules, please check our web pages.
