Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z809-02
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has established a set of Sustainable Forest Management
(SFM) standards adapted from the six Canadian SFM criteria originally established by the Canadian
Council of Forest Ministers. The six criteria outline the environmental, social and economic values
to be managed for all forests. The performance criteria are set for each Defined Forest Area (DFA)
through a detailed public consultation process and locally based indicators of these values. Applicants
seeking to certify a DFA must undergo an independent third-party audit of the management system
and field inspections to confirm the attainment of performance objectives. The certification verifies
that a specified DFA is being managed sustainably at a local level.
In the BC Timber Sales Peace-Liard Business Area, the Fort St. John, Fort Nelson and Dawson Creek
field teams, in conjunction with other major licensee partners, have prepared Sustainable Forest
Management Plans pertinent to their respective DFAs. Third-party audits have confirmed adherence
to the respective SFM plans and management system, resulting in the field teams being CSA certified.
