Downloading Guidebooks
Instructions for downloading off-line
versions of FPC Guidebooks
For clients outside the Ministry of Forests we are offering
an option to download each guidebook so it can be viewed off-line using your browser to
access the files on your hard drive. This allows you to browse a guidebook without
having to be connected to the Internet at the time. However, it also means you will
not benefit from any updates, corrections or amendments unless you check the site
regularly and download updated versions.
Please note that the download files are very large (.5 to 7
megabytes) and will take a considerable time to download across a slower internet
connection. Ministry staff should not attempt to download these files as they
already have access to the guidebook files on their local office LANs.
As guidebooks are revised we will be offering them in Adobe
Acrobat Reader format. Click on PDF to open the file then save it to your local
drive for later use.
Instructions
Note: It may be helpful to
print this page so you have these instructions available while downloading
- From the FPC
Guidebook Home Page go to the title you are interested in and click on Download EXE
or, if you are a Macintosh user, Download ZIP.
- When prompted by your browser select SAVE TO DISK.
- Save each guidebook in its own unique directory on your hard
drive. Failure to do this will result in errors because guidebook filenames are
often duplicated.
- After downloading is completed, go to the directory you
created using your file manager and double-click on the self-extracting .exe file to
de-compress the files into that directory. Macintosh users will click on the .zip
file to de-compress the files.
- When completed, the .exe or .zip file may be deleted to save
drive space.
- Using your browser, select FILE, OPEN and click on the file
with the filename ending in toc.htm to open the table of contents file. If you can't
find it, click on any .htm file then click on the RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS hyperlink at
the top.
- Once you have the table of contents file open you may want
to create a favourite/bookmark to the file for future reference.
