    Fossil Management Framework - Background

    The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has been leading the development of a Fossil Management Framework for British Columbia. In 2004, after conducting a review of fossil management in other jurisdictions, the Province endorsed a number of principles, which provided the basis for the development of the Framework. The principles focus on managing fossils as a heritage resource, establishing an order of importance for the management and use of fossils, and developing a framework that recognizes both the interests of stakeholders and the heritage value of fossils. 

    Beginning under the former Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, the Province first invited stakeholders to consult on a Fossil Management Framework in 2005. Resulting from that initial consultation, the ministry and a working group of other provincial agencies developed the basic elements included in the Framework to guide the management of fossils in British Columbia. These elements form the basis of this current round of consultation for the Framework.

    The Framework includes elements that deal with use and protection of the resource, based on existing legislation and policy instruments. Some core elements of the Framework related to legislative authority and administration are already in place and will be used as the basis for managing fossils. Comments, input and ideas related to the management of fossils in British Columbia were sought through this consultation process.
