Map Files In 1998 Tree Improvement
Branch (TIB) undertook a review of the
interior Seed Planning Zones (SPZ) with
the help of Research Branch. The final
product of this review was digital map
files for five species (interior lodgepole
pine, interior spruce, interior Douglas-fir,
western white pine and western larch).
These maps were produced using an Albers
Equal Area Projection. The map files that
are located on TIBs website are
in various formats so they can be view
using different platforms. The files are
in ArcInfo, Arc Shape Arc Export and IGDS
formats. These formats allow the user
flexibility in viewing whether using ArcInfo
itself, Microstation or GeoMedia.
Plotter Files
Along with the digital map files TIB
had plotter files developed. These files
can be printed on an HP650c plotter. For
three of the species (interior lodgepole
pine, interior spruce and interior Douglas-fir)
there are several map sheets/plotter files
for each species. These files are labeled
in such a way that the first map in the
series is for the northern part of the
province, e.g. seed_fd1.hp2 and
the highest number in the series is for
the southeast corner of the province,
e.g. seed_fd3.hp2. For more information
refer to the table below. For the remaining
two species, western white pine and western
larch each has only one plotter file. |

Interior Seed Planning Zone Review
The interior seed planning zones (SPZ)
were recently reviewed (1997-98). The
review involved close examination of SPZ
boundaries and the relationship between
genetic class, seedling request ordering,
transfer guideline application, and the
biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification
system (BEC). The review included input
from Ministry and industry clients involved
in tree breeding, orchard management,
forest genetics, seed planning, and silvicultural
activities.
