Weed Management

Subject Areas Noxious weeds are threatening the ecological health and productivity of British Columbia's public lands. Understanding the ecology and impact of noxious weeds will help to protect and restore ecosystems from these introduced plant pests. Their impact on plant communities and resource values is poorly understood. Weed infestations may result in losses of biological diversity in native plant communities through dominance of the weeds, significantly reduced ability for damaged ecosystems to be restored, reduced forage production for wildlife and domestic livestock, and impaired timber regeneration. Changes in habitat structure and function due to weeds have unknown effects on small mammals, insects, reptiles and other life forms. Weed infestations also potentially affect aesthetic values, and impair recreational opportunities.

The research undertaken has been designed to improve our understanding of the ecology and impact of noxious weeds, as well as, to develop and test management techniques.
