Grassland Restoration

Subject Areas Degraded soil Grassland restoration is a process of rebuilding grassland ecosystems using management intervention to speed up natural recovery processes.

The seeding of native grassland plants is an example of a grassland restoration technique often aimed at replacing late seral plant species. Degraded soil

In some cases, severely degraded grassland sites may have lost soil nutrients and/or other desirable soil properties. These grassland sites may require many decades for the recovery of late seral plant species to occur naturally because of undesirable soil conditions for plant establishment, growth and reproduction. Restoration of soil properties may be required first before restoration of late seral plant species can be successful.
