Direct Test of the Yield Tables Used in a Type 2 Silviculture Strategy

A system a strategic plans are now in-place across B.C. to guide the application of incremental silviculture. These plans are known as Silviculture Strategies. Some of them are based on forest-estate simulation which requires yield tables (and many other growth and yield assumptions). Errors in the yield tables result in incorrect strategies and inefficiencies in the resulting silviculture programs. Thus, methods are required to check the yield tables used in a Type 2 Silviculture Strategy.

Some methods to check yield tables have been proposed and implemented in B.C. Examples include:

  • A project in the Queen Charlotte Islands to check the second-growth yield tables used in TSR against a ground sample;

  • A system of permanent plots installed in an interior TFL to track the development of second-growth pine stands. The likely future use of this data to check yield tables is described in the report.

Projects such as these are truly “inventory projects” and you will need the services of forest inventory specialists to implement them.
