Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z809-02
The Canadian Standards Association has established a set of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) standards adapted from the six Canadian SFM criteria originally established by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers. The six criteria outline the environmental, social and economic values to be managed for all forests. The performance criteria are set for each Defined Forest Area (DFA) through a detailed public consultation process and locally based indicators of these values. Applicants seeking to certify a DFA must undergo an independent third-party audit of their management system and field inspections to confirm the attainment of performance objectives. The certification verifies that a specified DFA is being managed sustainably at a local level.
In conjunction with major licensee partners, BC Timber Sales, Prince George Business Area has prepared Sustainable Forest Management Plans for the Prince George DFA, the Mackenzie DFA and the Tree Farm Licence # 30 DFA. Third-party audits have confirmed adherence of the SFM plans and management system to the CSA Z809-02 standard.
Sustainable Forest Management System

The Prince George Business Area has operations in three Forest Districts and two Tree Farm Licences. The BC Timber Sales Prince George Business Area manages it’s commitments to SFM though our Sustainable Forest Management System (SFMS). This system integrates the requirements of an EMS and a SFM system. Our Sustainable Forest Management Policy applies in areas of our Business Area where a SFM Plan exists.
BC Timber Sales Sustainable Forest Management Plans establish the linkage between the strategic objectives which apply to the Forest Districts we operate in and the management strategies used to achieve them. SFMPs also reflect the specific objectives of the public in each DFA. BCTS utilizes our SFMS to facilitate adherence to CSA and ISO standards.
The Prince George Business Area SFMPs, a summary of our performance in our Annual Report and the results of 3rd party independent audits are available from the following links.
