In the BC Timber Sales Kamloops Business Area,
the Kamloops, Merritt, 100 Mile House, and Clearwater
field teams, have prepared Sustainable Forest
Management (SFM) Plans pertinent to their respective
defined forest areas. Third-party audits have
confirmed adherence to the respective SFM plans
and management system, resulting in these field
teams being certified to various Sustainable
Forest Management regimes.
Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Z809:08
The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) has
established a set of Sustainable Forest Management
(SFM) standards adapted from the six Canadian
SFM criteria originally established by the Canadian
Council of Forest Ministers. The six criteria
outline the environmental, social and economic
values to be managed for all forests. The performance
criteria are set for each Defined Forest Area
(DFA) through a detailed public consultation
process and locally based indicators of these
values. Applicants seeking to certify a DFA
must undergo an independent third-party audit
of the management system and field inspections
to confirm the attainment of performance objectives.
The certification verifies that a specified
DFA is being managed sustainably at a local
level. BCTS Kamloops has successfully certified its operations in the Merritt and Kamloops Timber Supply Areas to this standard.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Standard (SFIS 2010-2014)
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program
is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives
and performance measures developed by professional
foresters, conservationists and scientists,
among others that combines the perpetual growing
and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection
of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality.
The SFI Standard spells out the requirements
of compliance with the program. The SFIS is
based on nine principles that address economic,
environmental, cultural and legal issues, in
addition to a commitment to continuously improve
sustainable forest management. The Sustainable
Forestry Board solely governs the content of
the SFI Standard and Auditing Procedures and
Qualifications. BCTS Kamloops has successfully certified its 100 Mile House operations to this standard.
